Most of you have probably heard about artificial intelligence AI.
The most talked about product these days is called ChatGPT. It is a large language model that can generate human-like text, trained on a massive dataset of written works from the internet.
So I decided to try it by asking it a question of interest for us. This is it:
What are the most efficient measures to improve the quality of the water in fresh water lakes?
Following is ChatGPT’s unedited answer.
There are several measures that can improve the quality of water in fresh water lakes:
- Reduce nutrient pollution: Excess nutrients from agricultural runoff, sewage, and other sources can cause excessive algae growth, leading to low oxygen levels and the death of aquatic life.
- Control urbanization: Development and urbanization can lead to increased runoff, soil erosion, and nutrient pollution. By limiting new development and controlling existing sources of pollution, water quality can be improved.
- Implement best management practices: Agricultural and industrial activities can be managed to reduce runoff and nutrient pollution.
- Improve wastewater treatment: Improving wastewater treatment plants and septic systems can reduce the amount of nutrient pollution entering the lake.
- Restore wetland habitats: Wetlands are important natural filters that can remove excess nutrients and pollutants from runoff before it enters the lake.
- Monitor water quality: Regular monitoring of water quality is necessary to detect changes, track progress, and identify new sources of pollution.
- Educate the public: Raising awareness about the importance of water quality and the actions that individuals can take to reduce pollution can help improve water quality in lakes.
This is exactly what I got. Did not change a word. The robot generated this text in about 10 seconds.
Let me know what you think in the comments section.
PS. Microsoft says it will soon in-bed it into it’s Bing search engine and Edge browser.
I will add our thanks as well to you Jacques for your informative messages and all you do for our wonderful community. This was a lot of fun to read.
Merci.
Agreed, Michel.
Robots such as Chat are a useful tool that can improve productivity. Not worried that it will replace people like me, dear June.
You got it right, John. Just a useful tool.
Thanks for asking about golf, Jacques. I guess without emotions or personal aspirations it can not understand golf anymore than I can!
i asked chat this, “would you like to become a human?”
answered…… As an AI language model, I do not have desires or personal experiences. I exist to provide information and respond to questions to the best of my abilities based on the data I was trained on. I do not have the capability to feel emotions or have personal aspirations.
“then we’ll get along just fine!”
That’s fun!
Missing a few “minor” things, but overall pretty good.
Nobody can replace you Jacques, certainly not a tin brained machine.
Thanks for all you do!
Thank you for sharing. Although not totally comprehensive (e.g. shoreline protection, internal combustion engine restrictions), still an impressive, useful checklist from ChatGPT.
If you have a question – any question – for ChatGPT let me know and I will ask the robot, dear Maryse.
That is most impressive! Thank you!
Tom, tell Ryan I found ChatGPT a very interesting and useful tool that hold great promises. One should not forget that the output of the robot is a distillation of human knowledge.
You are right Robert but it can analyze data from water samples and suggest ways to improve the health of the lake..
For now it is ChatGPT Claudette but I suspect Microsoft will give it a new name soon.
Yes Christine but it missed some key elements like shoreline protection bands.
I will take the 5th on this one, Neil!
This is ChatGPT’s answer to your question about golf, Jean.
Sure! Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course with as few strokes as possible. The game is played on a course with either 9 or 18 holes, and the number of strokes taken to complete the course is recorded for each player. The player with the lowest total score wins.
Each hole on the course is a designated area of the course that consists of a teeing ground, fairway, rough, bunkers, and a putting green surrounded by the hole. The objective is to complete each hole in as few strokes as possible by hitting the ball from the teeing ground onto the fairway and then onto the putting green, where the ball is finally holed.
There are various clubs in a golfer’s bag, each designed for a specific type of shot. For example, drivers are used for tee shots on long holes, irons for approach shots to the green, and putters for strokes on the putting green.
Golf is considered a leisure sport and is enjoyed by millions of people around the world, both professionally and recreationally. It is known for its combination of physical skill, strategy, and etiquette, and is often considered a challenging and rewarding sport.
Thank you Jacques, Very interesting and informative. We appreciate the work of the DCC. You are always looking ahead for our community! I always thought AI referred to our elected politicians!
Pretty impressive!
Hopefully, the robot would give us a good mark after observing what a good job we do at keeping our lakes in very good health so that they remain clean and clear at all times.
Now we have to evaluate and assess it, (robot) to determine what mark it receives from us for his astute ability in assuring quality control of our lake, It’s almost as good a performance as the very human, non-robotic humans who do a great job doing just that all the time, each year.
A little help is always needed, even if it’s from the friendly robot. We could call it by its name, does it have one?
Can A I row a boat? Water samples…still need some humans
And you will be pleased to note that it is fellow Dunanyite working on this. Our son Ryan works for OpenAI and was involved in the development of ChatGPT! He promised to save us when the robots take over 😉
Dearest Jacques, Are you thinking the the DCA can be replaced by a computer program?! Absolutely not but it is good to know that AI supports all the work done by our community over that past many decades. Amazing program that can even pass medical school exams. But can it explain golf?
